TRAINING
Dr. Abreu presents six and twelve hour workshops and in-service training programs on a variety of subjects in brain injury rehabilitation. Programs can be constructed based on a departmental needs assessment.
DIRECT CARE
Dr. Abreu provides consultations on direct care for systems servicing clients with mild, moderate and severe cognitive disabilities. She will analyze the current clinical operation and facilitate systematic, standardized evaluation systems for clients with attentional deficits, visual neglect and executive function issues (planning, problem solving, self-monitoring). In addition, Dr. Abreu will help you to design combinations of motor skills with cognitive skills, functional activities and community participation for treatment and interventions to improve the health and satisfaction of your clients.
RESEARCH
Dr. Abreu provides objective, thoughtful, and experienced advice on evidence-based practice. She will help you build your knowledge base of basic research skills that you can use to evaluate your programs and practice. Examples will be provided to re-frame research as a practical activity that you can use to enhance your knowledge, skills and attitude toward supporting evaluation and treatment in the rehabilitation process.

SAMPLE TRAINING PROGRAM
THE QUADRAPHONIC APPROACH
The Quadraphonic Approach ("QA") is an interactive rehabilitation program, designed by Dr. Abreu, which can be used across the continuum of recovery from coma to community re-entry in both a traditional and managed care environment. This approach employs a team concept to coordinate the resources of the therapists, clients and their family groups for the evaluation and treatment of stroke, traumatic brain injury, brain tumors, cerebral palsy and other neurologic conditions. The Quadraphonic Approach uses both a micro and macro perspective for evaluation throughout the continuum of recovery. The micro perspective refers to the management of performance components or sub-skills. The macro perspective refers to the analysis of functional performance or real life occupations.
The Quadraphonic Approach is based on the assumptions that:
- Integration of cognitive-perceptual and postural control analysis is crucial for cognitive rehabilitation
- Continuous analysis of occupational performance from both a micro and macro perspective is required for effective rehabilitation
- The narrative process of story telling and story making is integral to the rehab process
Please note that micro and macro perspectives are not mutually exclusive. There is a continual shift from one perspective to another depending on the requirements of the situation.
Each participant in a QA training program will receive an extensive series of handouts, which they will be able to use in clinical and educational settings. The handouts will combine both quantitative and qualitative methods for evaluation and treatment. Each individual handout may serve as the basis for an individualized in-service training program.
QUADRAPHONIC APPROACH COURSE OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of a QA training program, participants will be able to:
- Describe the principles of The Quadraphonic Approach and the process of rehabilitation from coma to community re-entry.
- Describe the theories and functional applications upon which the Quadraphonic Approach is based.
- Identify the key components for evaluation and treatment.
- Administer tests for attention, visual perception, memory, problem solving, motor planning, initiation and safety and grade the tests on a seven-point scale.
- Perform a functional analysis of ADLs, IADLs, play, and productive activities
FEE FOR SERVICE
The fee for on-site training and consultation services is $3,500 per diem for a six hour (one day), on-site program or $6,000 for a twelve hour (two day) program. This fee includes all expenses (travel, lodging, course and consultation materials). All options include a pre-program, one-hour, needs assessment telephone consultation that is conducted after execution of contract. A one-hour, post-operational telephone review is also offered.
